The news broke yesterday that Mon Williams has been trying linebacker on for size. With him buried on the depth chart at running back, it would make sense on the surface. With Brandon Spikes having had an injury, Dustin Doe a little gimpy, and Ryan Stamper having a giant club cast, the ‘backers could use some more depth.
I thought it was a little weird, because Williams was highly-recruited in Texas and it was seen as somewhat of a small coup for Florida to get him. It was very similar to the Markus Manson story, actually. I would have figured he’d transfer and try to get playing time elsewhere than switch to defense, because changing position would basically end any hopes (however remote they were) of playing in the NFL.
Well, it appears that Williams is committed to being a Gator. The Gainesville Sun is reporting that both he and Charlie Strong asked for him to make the switch to linebacker. Nothing is permanent yet, but getting some reps there in practice could help him get on the field in special teams more and allow him to get more playing time.
